A Parliament Hinge is a type of door hinge that allows a door to open to a full 180\u00ba so it can fold back flat against a wall. This feature is handy in areas where maximum doorway opening is required, such as French doors that are so popular in modern homes or settings where a wide clearance is needed, especially for wheelchair users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can spot a Parliament Hinge by its extended length; this feature facilitates a wider opening and allows doors to clear obstructions like architraves and other protrusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where can you find Parliament Hinges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n


Historically, Parliament hinges could be found on old desks and cabinets from the seventeenth century onwards, ranging in size from the very large for heavy doors to the tiniest decorative hinge for use on jewellery boxes and the like. They were used most extensively in grand houses and public buildings where there was a need for doors to open fully, hence the rather posh name.
