Our adjustable shelving systems, sometimes referred to as slotted shelving systems or metal track shelving, are based on 4 different bookcase shelving strips; each with distinct features and advantages. The 4 types are the Flat bookcase strip, the Raised bookcase strip (sometimes called “Top Hat” due to the shape of its profile), the Universal Bookcase Strip (commonly referred to as “M” Section due to its profile) and finally “U” Section Bookcase strips. These different profiles vary in maximum load capacity and mounting options.
Applications for Cooke Brothers adjustable shelving systems
Shopfitters and retail shelving systems
Thanks to their adjustability and versatility, our wall mounted shelving systems are ideal for shopfitters. The ongoing merchandising requirements of the retail industry mean that shelves need to be moved around, removed and replaced regularly. Whether you’re using wooden, metal or even glass shelving, our shelving systems are ideal. You can add our rubber or self-adhesive buffers to the support studs to avoid point loading on glass shelving.
Cabinetry and furniture manufacturers
When it comes to furniture manufacture or hand-crafted cabinetry our Flat bookcase strip uprights are a great solution providing both flush installation options as well as a variety of finishes to retain the aesthetic of the finished piece of furniture. Our “U” Section uprights are also very narrow making them a subtle, yet strong, solution for internal cabinet shelving.
Domestic storage solutions
Wall mounted adjustable shelving systems are a great economic alternative for home use; providing highly customisable and flexible home storage solutions. Our shelving systems won’t look out of place in a garage, office or even in an alcove providing smart book shelving in your living room.
Mounting options for slotted shelf uprights
Mounting the bookcase strips of our shelving support systems is key to both the maximum capacity and the adjustability of the overall system. Depending on the application, each type offers a unique set of advantages.
Flat Bookcase Strip
The Flat bookcase strips are designed for flush installation and require stepped grooves to be machined into the mounting surface. This makes them an ideal choice to be mounted into cabinetry or on to a wooden surface. We have custom-made rebate cutters designed specifically for the different support profiles. For the Flat bookcase strips, you will need the Flat rebate stepped cutter tool. See our range of finishes for the Flat bookcase strips.
Raised Bookcase Strip
The Raised strips are specifically designed for surface mounting with flat, flanged edges and a raised middle section. The wide flanges allow for spot welding to be utilised, making the design suitable for installation within steel cabinets. This style of strip is not designed to be flush-mounted. Take a look at the full range of Raised bookcase strips here.
Universal Bookcase Strip (M Section)
The Universal strips can be surface mounted or rebated for a flush finish depending on the application. When surface mounting the strips one popular option is to use décor panels or tiling to make the wall flush with the strip. View the full range of “M” Section supports here. To rebate this strip you will require the “M” Section rebate tool.
U Section Bookcase Strip
Similar to above, the “U” Section strips can be both surface mounted and rebated for a flush finish. These strips are narrower than their “M” section counterparts making them a more subtle, and in some cases, more aesthetically pleasing finish. Click here to our full range of finishes of “U” Section supports. To flush mount this strip you will require the “U” Section rebate tool.
Shelf systems maximum capacity
Each of the 4 types of shelf support offer different maximum capacities. Thanks to its 2mm material thickness, the “U” Section is the strongest; available only with double studs, these are ideal for higher capacity storage solutions.
The “M” Section strips are more robust than the Flat and Raised versions thanks to the shape of its profile. Available with both single and double studs these are a versatile solution for many applications.
The Flat bookcase strips are the preferred choice of cabinet makers and furniture craftsmen. These flush fitting strips provide an elegant and simple finish and are available with both single and double studs, providing options for lighter and heavier capacities.
The Raised bookcase strips are a lower cost alternative to the Flat strips, and do not require any kind of rebating to install. Available with both single and double studs, these are a versatile option for many applications. With the single stud option, wooden shelves can be fixed to the studs via the single hole on each stud (these can also be used to fit rubber buffers to protect glass shelves or correct minor height discrepancies caused by warped wood or installation errors).
Shelf installation tip
When installing longer shelves, or shelves that need to take a more substantial weight, it is advisable to fit a central support to prevent bowing in the middle of the shelf.
