DIY jobs to get your home ready for Christmas this year

December 2022

Is your home ready for Christmas? With so much to do in the lead-up to the holiday season, we have put together this simple and easy-to-follow DIY guide to make the run-up a little smoother and ensure your home is cosy and inviting for your holiday guests.

Home DIY tasks at Christmas

It’s time to de-clutter

Make the chaos of Christmas easier to deal with by ensuring you have a clean and open space before your holiday guests arrive with their festivities. You most likely still have clutter from last Christmas that you haven’t gotten around to dealing with yet. So light a candle, put on your favourite playlist, and be ruthless.

Tackle those “little” jobs

You know those pesky little jobs you keep meaning to do but never seem to find the time for? Well, now’s the time:

  • Christmas can be magical, but the weather is frightful. Get your boiler serviced before the Christmas holidays begin, you don’t want to be shivering whilst carving the turkey.
  • Time for a quick battery and lightbulb check. This 3-minute task means you can relax knowing your house is lit up, the smoke alarm is working, and everyone is safe and snug
  • Minimise clutter and maximise your space throughout your home with quick and simple storage solutions. From adding some hooks by the front door to neatly hanging up your extra guests coats to decluttering the floor with some shelving units. Not only will this save your space, these simple storage solutions can last years.
  • It is time to fix those wonky cupboards. It won’t take as long as you are thinking to secure the doors, plus it’s better to take a few minutes out of your day than risk one falling on Nanna’s head. Here’s a guide on how to install strong hinges for added security.

Are the little ones safe?

Making sure your home is safe for the little ones isn’t something that might cross your mind when thinking about getting your home Christmas-ready, but we have two quick DIY finishing touches you can do in minutes to avoid any chances of an A&E visit!

  • Make sharp corners less of a hazard by securing them with double-sided tape and piping foam; it easily comes off when your guests depart, and it is one less thing to worry about when the little ones are running around.
  • Install safety hinges on your cupboard doors to prevent little hands from becoming trapped; it takes less than 10 minutes and is simple and effective in preventing crushed fingers.

Improve your security

Sometimes you can get so caught up in the fun and magic of Christmas that ensuring your home is secure isn’t the first thing on your to-do list. Yet with more people away visiting family and presents in full view, burglaries peak during the festive season. Check out these little tips to keep you and your valuables safe:

  • Keep presents from prying eyes by moving them away from windows and somewhere less obvious, and don’t forget to shut your curtains at night to prevent a tempted intruder from entering your home.
  • No matter how tired you are after the festivities, ensure you lock all windows and doors before heading to bed. It is too easy to forget when all you want to do is lay in bed, but this is what the burglars are counting on.
  • Secure your doors with anti-vandal and anti-theft solutions to deter those looking for an easy break-in!
