Light Duty Continuous Piano Hinges Technical Information

Mild Steel (MS)

Mild Steel (MS)

A strong base material generally used on internal applications rather than externally. Additional finishes are available which can aid in corrosion resistance.
Stainless Steel 304 (SS304)

Stainless Steel 304 (SS304)

Our most widely specified grade of Stainless Steel, suitable for both internal and external applications. Stainless steel hinges are recommended for all potentially corrosive or weather exposed installations.
Brass (B)

Brass (B)

A relatively soft alloy of copper and zinc, which is only offered as a special for non fire door applications.
Aluminium (AL)

Aluminium (AL)

The versatility of aluminium makes it the most widely used metal after steel - light weight with good corrosion resistance.

The 0.7mm (0.026") and 0.9mm (0.036", 20 gauge) hinge leaf thickness are the lightest and most economically priced continuous hinge in the range for general use. They have been produced by Cooke Brothers for over 100 years and are based on the needs of traditional cabinet makers for a high quality continuous hinge.

Continuous Hinges are an ideal solution for many applications including cabinets, storage boxes and DIY projects. These light-weight continuous hinges provide a more delicate aesthetic for furniture and smaller applications; noticeably reducing the gaps between panels. They can finish off a piece of furniture nicely, with elegant, fine lines that don’t detract from the overall craftsmanship.

Cooke Brothers provide a free cut to length service for continuous hinges. You can now order the exact size you need.

  • The minimum cut length is 200mm.
  • The maximum length is 2400mm.
  • Where necessary we will advise on length depending on the leaf size and hole positions.
  • For some plated finishes the maximum cut length is 1829mm.
  • The cutting process may not be suitable for some plated finishes.
  • Cut to length products are non-returnable.
  • Any cut edge may have a slight burr. Handling with gloves is recommended.
  • Tolerance on cut pieces +1/-2mm on length and +1/-1mm on squareness.

The Advantages of Continuous Hinges?

Continuous Hinges offer the same basic functionality that you would expect from a traditional Butt Hinge, however, there are some significant differences that make them the ideal choice for a wide variety of applications.

Improved Safety
One of the key advantages of Continuous Hinges is their suitability for use in environments where security and safety are a key concern. Thanks to the design of these hinges, they are ideal for high traffic and public environments such as schools, hospitals and hotels. Compared to other types of hinges, the reduced ligature design of Continuous Hinges presents fewer sharp edges reducing the possibility of injury. In environments where children are present, these hinges remove the possibility of children getting their fingers caught in the door from the hinge knuckle side.

Enhanced Security
Continuous Hinges also provide improved security with their anti-vandal design. They offer fewer gaps and no weak points making them extremely difficult to force open. As a result, they have become increasingly popular for applications in arduous and secure environments.

Smooth Action
From furniture and cabinets to architectural applications in commercial environments, Continuous Hinges offer perfect alignment for the full length of the door, providing a smooth action. By spreading the load along the full height of the door frame, Continuous Hinges also increase the load capacity of the door without putting unnecessary stress on the door frame.

Fire Door Kits
Continuous Hinges are a great solution for many architectural door applications. They offer high levels of security and are ideal for high-traffic doors in commercial environments. As a result, Continuous Hinges are an excellent choice to combine with our Fire Door Kits.

Standard Continuous Hinge Sizes
The continuous hinges are a selection from Cooke Brothers full continuous hinge range. The sizes have been carefully chosen to provide hinges of the right material, widths and strengths to meet most customers' needs. If you cannot find a hinge to match your requirements, please contact our Sales Department who will be able to advise on suitable hinges from the comprehensive hinge range.

Standard Continuous Hinge Lengths
Although all sizes in the continuous hinge range can be produced in any length, for practical purposes it is usually stocked and sold in standard lengths. The main length is 1829mm (6ft).

Imperial and Metric Sizes
The full continuous hinge range is based on both traditional imperial products and modern metric products. To assist your selection the products, whether tooled as imperial or metric, have all been dimensioned in millimetres. Continuous hinges are displayed in hinge leaf thickness order, starting with the lightest.

CONTINUOUS HINGE TECHNOLOGY

A - Hinge leaf thickness
The material thickness should be selected first as this establishes the range most suitable for your application.

B - Hinge pin diameter
For each leaf thickness there is a limited range of pin options against which the main hinge sizes are shown.

C - Hinge open width
The overall width of the hinge when the leaves are opened out flat i.e. to 180 degrees.

D - Hinge knuckle length
The length of the individual knuckles or joints.

FIXING HOLE INFORMATION

Un-drilled hinges are referred to as 'No holes'.
All holes are pierced in pairs directly opposite each other on opposite flaps, staggered holes can be supplied to special order.

E - Hole centres
The repeat distance for fixing centres along the length.

F - Hole diameter un-countersunk
Referred to as plain holes.

G - Screwsize
For hinges where countersunk, referred to as 'C'sk holes'.

L - Overall continuous hinge length.

Some minor variations to the standard sizes must be expected. The hole centres (E) stated represent the approximate centres for any pair of holes. Pre-drilling the door or frame for a complete length of continuous hinge using multiples of the centres shown is not recommended. For accurate hole positions over the whole length please contact technical sales.
