Shelf support systems play a huge role in supporting many casework projects. They are visible on the finished side of a case and include parallel columns of holes that are evenly spaced. This precise craftsmanship can support heavy loads as well as lighter loads for smaller projects.

What are shelf support systems?

Shelf support systems can vary widely in size, colour and materials, whether it’s wood such as oak, or other metals and plastics. There are many different styles of shelf support systems that are used in cabinets, shelves, bookcases and many more.

Different types of shelf support systems and how they can be used

There are many types of shelf support systems which can each suit different spaces and applications. We’ll take a look at the main shelf support types and give an introduction to each below.

Small shelf brackets

Small shelf brackets are slightly smaller than L-shaped supports and designed with the intention of being seen; they are available in a range of different styles and materials, from plastic to many other types of metals like copper and silver.

Application:

As these brackets are smaller, naturally they can only hold a lighter load and are therefore more appropriate in support lighter loads such as a smaller bookshelf.

L-shaped

Identifiable by their iconic L shape, these shelf support systems feature a right angle and holes that are used to screw the shelf to the support.

Application:

The typical use of an L-shape support is to join a wooden shelf to a wall or to join two separate furniture parts. However, some may feature a plastic covering used with glass shelves.

These supports are best used to support heavy weight as the right angle structure, along with the metal finish makes them a sturdy option.

Paddle

These feature an iconic paddle shape where the flat side faces up. Paddle supports are perfect for a variety of shelving and actually the most commonly used style available in a variety of metal finishes.

Application:

They’re more suitable for smaller casework projects which are commonly seen in both domestic and commercial settings alike. Some of these uses include small cabinets, wardrobes and cupboards.

Pin

Pin shelf support systems feature a small pin-like design that protrudes from a hole in the wall.

Application:

Pin supports can be used with heavy loads, but they may cause depressions in shelf edges – worth noting when attempting to use this for a heavy bookshelf for example. Otherwise, the application process is very simple and can be a quick option for supporting a smaller build such as wardrobe/cupboard shelving.

All plastic

As the name suggests, these support systems are made entirely from plastic and are not as appealing as some of the other options. Some also feature a useful locking tab.

Application:

These cheaper support systems are more appropriate in utility-grade cabinets and shelving as they aren’t as stylish but still offer support for lighter loads, where looks aren’t as important.

Pilasters/brackets

This is a more diverse option for shelving. Instead of drilling holes for shelf pins, you can instead install steel shelving pilasters which are slotted to hold small brackets. They are sold in different lengths and metal finishes.

Application:

They can be surface mounted but look better when they are installed in case sides. Pilasters are easily adjustable and therefore make for great shelf hard work. As a workable and attractive option, they are ideal for utility shelves, as well as home office cabinets.

Sleeves/pins

Sleeves and pins function a bit differently from other shelf types, where the sleeve is inserted into a hole that’s drilled into the wall. These pins then hold and support the pins to make a two-component shelving system. These pins have the same finish options are the previously mentioned regular pins.

Application:

This high-style option can be used in a variety of cabinet and shelving projects and offer the best final look when compared to the rest.
