Engineered For The Elements - RNLI

Few environments are as unforgiving as the cold, rough waters around Britain’s shores. These are the conditions that RNLI lifeboats face every single day, launching into extreme weather to carry out critical rescue missions.

Their Shannon-class boats, the latest addition to the RNLI fleet, are the first modern all-weather lifeboats to be propelled by waterjets instead of traditional propellers, a game-changer for agility and manoeuvrability in the roughest seas.

When operating in life-or-death situations, every component on board must perform flawlessly, no matter the conditions. That’s why the RNLI specified Cooke Brothers’ heavy-duty continuous hinges in 316-grade stainless steel, the gold standard for corrosion resistance.

Marine environments present some of the harshest conditions for hardware, with constant exposure to saltwater, extreme weather, and heavy use. 316 stainless steel is engineered to withstand these challenges, offering exceptional resistance to corrosion, particularly from the salt and chlorides found in seawater. Unlike standard stainless steels, it holds up against the relentless exposure of marine conditions, making it the ideal choice for RNLI’s high-performance fleet.

Our heavy-duty continuous hinges are renowned for their strength, providing even weight distribution along the entire length of the hinge, making them incredibly strong and able to support heavy loads. Manufactured in Britain from 2.5mm gauge steel, these hinges pack exceptional durability and strength in an open width of just 76mm.

Heavy Duty Continuous Hinge

Choosing hinges that won’t let them down was critical for a fleet that never stops saving lives. We’re proud to see Cooke Brothers’ engineering standing up to the challenge on board the RNLI’s Shannon-class lifeboats, helping to keep these vessels in action for years to come.
