Raised Bookcase Strip

This surface-mounted strip, sometimes called a top hat section because of its raised central profile, is quick to install without needing routed grooves.

It’s ideal for educational and commercial furniture and perfect where speed of installation is a priority. It has a visible profile, so it’s perfect for places with a more robust aesthetic.

M Section Bookcase Strip

The ‘M’ section shelf support strip is really flexible because it can be either flush or surface mounted, but it’s also very strong. It’s often used in modular or multi-purpose furniture because of its clean, consistent profile.

U Section Bookcase Strip

U-Section bookcase strips bring together the strength of the flat strip with the ease of installation of the raised versions, along with excellent load capacity and alignment flexibility. The U-section strip is often found in commercial and public environments thanks to its strength and practical installation.

Installing Shelf Support Systems: Best Practice Guidelines

Correct installation is key to the performance, longevity and safety of any shelf support system. Whether you’re using flat, raised, M-section or U-section bookcase strips, following a few standard guidelines will help ensure stability and strength.

Shelf support strips should be inlaid or surface-mounted on the inside end faces of each shelving bay. For longer spans or heavier loads, we recommend installing additional strips on the rear panel of the cabinet to increase load capacity and reduce the risk of the shelf sagging over time, and we recommend double studs on shelves that need to carry heavier loads.

All strips should be fitted from a common level starting point at the base of the shelving unit. This precise vertical positioning will avoid misalignment when inserting the shelf studs.

For glass shelving or wooden shelves that are prone to warping, use shelf buffers. These help distribute the load, accommodate minor discrepancies in shelf alignment, and reduce stress points to avoid potential breakages.

It’s always a good idea to test-load a lower shelf to the maximum weight that it will have to support before anything is loaded on the upper shelves. This will help identify any installation issues early on.
